Position Overview

The Intern Data Scientist will develop a set of skills that enable them to interpret and transform raw data into meaningful insights to support decision-making. This is predominantly an office-based position, involving detailed review, validation, and annotation of ecological data.

Key activities

The intern will carry out tasks involving data collection using technological instruments (such as radar, cameras, and autonomous recorders), database processing, interaction with statistical software, programming in R, and the production of data analysis, modelling, and results reporting.

In terms of technical skills to be developed, emphasis is placed on experience with STRIX-specific software for processing Radar BirdTrack® and BioAnalytics® data, database management using SQL and Excel, programming in R with various libraries (e.g., terra, mgcv) for statistical analysis and data visualization, application of machine learning tools, automated integration of data management and storage platforms, and the production of automated reports using Markdown/Quarto.

Qualifications

- University graduation in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field. Preference for Master's degree.
- Knowledge of biostatistics, data modelling, and analysis.
- General understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data.

Desirable skills

- Analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Sense of responsibility in meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
- Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in writing scientific reports and articles in English is a plus.
