Position Overview
The Intern Biologist will develop a set of skills that enable them to interpret and transform raw data into meaningful insights to support decision-making. This is predominantly an office-based position, involving detailed review, validation, and annotation of biological data, focused on birds or bats.
Key activities
The intern will carry out tasks involving data collection using technological instruments (such as radar, cameras, and autonomous recorders), database processing and validation, and results reporting.
In terms of technical skills to be developed, emphasis is placed on experience with STRIX-specific software for processing Radar BirdTrack® and BioAnalytics® data to:
- Validate and annotate avian target data collected using radar and camera systems and
bat detections with audio recorders.
- Collaborate with a team of biologists to ensure the quality and accuracy of ecological
datasets.
- Record and curate detailed observations of bird and bat species, including behaviour,
flight patterns, and distribution.
- Process and analyse large ecological datasets to inform conservation and research
efforts.
- Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, working in both office and
field settings.
Qualifications
- University graduation in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field. Preference
for Master's degree.
- Knowledge of ecological data validation and bird or bat monitoring. Interest in the
identification of bird and bat species.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy under diverse conditions.
- Physical robustness and the ability to work under adverse weather conditions, if
required.
Desirable skills
- Knowledge in bird or bat survey methods, including species identification.
- Familiarity with biodiversity monitoring technologies and methodologies.
- Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
