Ecological Data Analyst
Position Overview
The primary role of the Ecological Data Analyst is to validate avian target data collected through radar and camera technology. This is predominantly an office-based position, involving detailed review, validation, and annotation of ecological data. The role also includes the ability to conduct offshore seabird surveys when and if required. Candidates will be selected from a pool of bird identification specialists with the skills and qualifications outlined below.
Key Responsibilities
Validate and annotate avian target data collected using radar and camera systems.
Collaborate with a team of biologists to ensure the quality and accuracy of ecological datasets.
Conduct seabird surveys in offshore environments on an as-needed basis, using standardised methodologies:
- Record and curate detailed observations of seabird species, including behaviour, flight patterns, and distribution.
- Estimate bird counts, flight heights, and distances during field surveys.
Process and analyse large ecological datasets to inform conservation and research efforts.
Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, working in both office and field settings.
Qualifications
Advanced degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field. Alternatively, a proven track record of biodiversity monitoring experience, with a minimum of 4 years demonstrable experience.
Proven expertise in ecological data validation and seabird monitoring, particularly in offshore environments.
Proficient in the identification of North Atlantic seabird species.
Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy under diverse conditions. Physical robustness and the ability to work aboard boats under adverse weather conditions, if required.
Visual acuity for validating avian targets and detecting seabirds on the sea surface or in flight.
Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
Desirable Skills
Knowledge of spatial modelling using GIS and proficiency in the R programming language.
Hands-on experience validating avian targets identified through radar and camera systems.
Proficiency in seabird survey methods, including bird counting, flight height estimation, and distance assessment.
Familiarity with marine biodiversity monitoring technologies and methodologies.
